Recipe | Valentine’s Breakfast

There’s no doubt that Valentine’s day has become grossly commercialised. However, somewhere behind the tacky cards and cuddly toys the sentiment is still there.

The less cynical side to me enjoys the romantic gestures Valentine’s day encourages. When it comes to Valentine’s, actions speak far louder than words and it’s the little gestures that make it special, like making your other half breakfast in bed.


A Valentine’s breakfast is a great idea to make for your boyfriend because not only are they notoriously hard to buy for but the way to a man’s heart is definitely through his stomach!


This Valentine’s breakfast idea is simple but effective as well as being a healthy and balanced meal, unlike the usual sugary Valentine’s treats.


All you need is some heart-shaped cookie cutters in various sizes, seeded wholemeal bread, an avocado and an egg. Here’s how to make it.

  1. First of all, cut a heart shape out of a slice of bread and toast it whilst place a cookie cutter on a plate and fill it with half an avocado mashed with a fork, making sure to push right to the sides so the shape is distinct.

  2. For the fried egg, separate the white and the yolk then pour the white into the frying pan. Once it’s turned white, take it off the heat and carefully press the biggest cutter into it to make the heart shape.

  3. Then cut out a heart using the smallest cutter in the centre of the egg white and pour the yolk into the hole once returned to the heat. However, it depends if you’re going for style over substance or not. If you still want a runny yoke, just break an egg into a frying pan and shape it with the heart-shaped cookie cutter once cooked.

  4. Finally, place the toast and egg on the plate with the avocado, sprinkle with sunflower seeds and season with salt and pepper.
